MAP Growth tests aid in reading and math learning

Crete Elementary uses MAP Growth tests in reading and math to determine each student’s instructional level. The tests also measure their academic growth throughout the year and from one year to the next.

All K-2 students take the tests.

MAP Growth tests are adaptive tests taken on a computer or tablet. The test becomes more difficult when a student answers a question correctly and easier when he or she answers incorrectly, so the test specifically targets the child’s learning level. In addition, the information aligns with lessons already being taught at the school according to state standards.

RIT scores

MAP Growth results are represented as RIT scores. The RIT scale measures in equal intervals, regardless of a student’s grade, and remains stable over time.

This allows the school to measure students’ growth between tests and to understand if they are performing on, above or below grade level. The scores show teachers where to focus attention to optimize a student’s learning.

Normative data

MAP Growth normative data are calculated using anonymous test results from more than 10 million students around the country.

Knowing the top, middle and bottom scores of all these students combined allows a teacher to see how a student is doing compared to the norms and help him or her learn better.
